Lead in
Greet the students and ask about their hobbies. Then lead in the topic by looking at the pictures of Yao Ming.
Before-writing
1. Teach the students the expressions of describing people’s appearance.
(1)Teach the words and expressions of describing people’s height and build by comparing some pictures. Then practice the sentence structure “He is + adj.”.
(2)Teach the students more words to describe people’s hair. Then practice “He has + N.”
2. Summary: summarize the words and sentences of describing people’s appearance with a mind-map.
3. Reading
(1)Let the students read an article about Yuan Longping, and fill in the blanks to answer what he looks like.
(2)Let the students read the article again, and find the reasons to explain why people respect and like Yuan Longping.
4. Group-work
(1)Divide the students into several groups and let them discuss in groups about what some of their teachers look like.
(2)Student draw lots to decide which teacher they will talk about. After discussion, choose some students to describe some of their teachers and let others guess who they are.
While-writing
Students work individually to write their own articles to describe their classmates. If it is possible, they can draw a picture of the person.
Post-writing
1. Show some of the students’ articles on the screen and check with the whole class. Help to correct some of the mistakes in their writing and summarize the good expressions as well.
2. Summary: Help students to make a conclusion about the writing structure of describing people and encourage them not to judge a person by his appearance.
Homework
Write an article to describe a person around you and then draw a picture of him/her. Then write on a postcard.
